ANWIL restarts production of fertilizers and deliveries of raw CO2
Striving to ensure the country’s food safety and to protect the health of Poles, ORLEN Group’s ANWIL has decided to restart the production of nitrogenous fertilizers despite the prevalence of difficult macroeconomic conditions. This means that the company is also set to recommence the deliveries of raw CO2 – a component that is used, in a processed form, inter alia in the production of food and in the pharmaceutical industry. ANWIL is monitoring the situation on the market on an on-going basis and takes into account, in the activities it undertakes, both the business challenges it faces and the social responsibility of the company.
“The unprecedented natural gas price hikes have impacted the fertilizer industry not only in Poland, but across Europe. ANWIL was one of the few companies that decided to continue its production for quite some time in order to ensure the availability of fertilizers on the Polish market. Production was suspended solely due to business-related reasons that were beyond the control of the ORLEN Group. We have noticed, however, huge demand for our products, not only in the food industry, but also in the medical sector, where liquid CO2 and dry ice are required in transplantology. Striving to ensure a proper level of food safety in Poland, we decided to restart the operation of our fertilizer manufacturing lines – a step that will also allow us to recommence deliveries of one of the semi-finished products originating from our Włocławek plant, namely raw CO2. We shall take every effort to make sure that limitations resulting from high natural gas prices exert as little impact on the ORLEN Group as possible” – says Daniel Obajtek, CEO, PKN ORLEN.
ANWIL does not act in the capacity of a CO2 distributor. Carbon dioxide is a side product created in the process of manufacturing nitrogenous fertilizers. In consideration of the country’s food safety, the company commenced negotiations with its sole contractor who is the recipient of this product. The said negotiations aim at ensuring sufficient deliveries of raw CO2 required by industries and sectors playing an important role in Poland’s public life, with a particular emphasis placed on operations that are of key significance for the life and health of Poles, as well as for ensuring public safety and for guaranteeing the availability of various goods on the market. ANWIL will recommence the supply of raw CO2 within the next 48 hours.
Once the production of fertilizers has been recommenced, their price will reflect the current natural gas prices and other market conditions. ANWIL is looking forward to a more stable situation on the natural gas market and expects that relevant solutions supporting the fertilizer manufacturing sector will be worked out.
